Literacy Resources

Did you know that one in five adults in the United States functions at the lowest level of literacy? These adults often are not able to total an entry on a deposit slip, locate the time and place of a meeting on a form or identify specific information in a brief news article. Did you know that the greatest determining factor of the educational success of a child is the education level of the parents? Or that one in five children lives in poverty?

How can you help? Contact local literacy groups, libraries or community colleges in your area. Volunteer for a local family literacy program. Read up on childhood and adult learning disabilities.

The following resources tell you how to become an advocate for literacy, help another adult become a better reader or guide you and your child in learning together.
