Each worksheet refers students to the appropriate page in a specific issue of the newspaper, asks pertinent questions and then gives a writing topic. The "Order of the Pen" at the bottom of each page offers suggestions to help students improve their writing.

April 28, 2013: Sound of Music...
Today’s e-edition has the Summer Concert Guide for 2013 (Sun., April 28, Arts & Culture, pages 1E, 2E, and 3E). The list of events include Comedy, Hip Hop, Electronic, Pop, Country, Rock, Folk (string and jam bands), Festivals and Local Bands. That’s a lot of music. |

April 21, 2013: Do over...
"Jeffco students bring history to life and have fun doing it" (Sun., April 21, page 3B) reports about students from four Jefferson County schools re-enacting the Battle of Saratoga from the Revolutionary War. Students wore period costumes and used props to add realism to their efforts. They have spent months preparing. |
April 14 , 2013: Snowfall...
"Cynicism, more than snow, has been piling up" (Sun., April 14, page 2B) explains that last week's forecast for snow was off the mark. Snow was predicted, it did not fall in the amounts forecast. Another April snowstorm is expected this week. We can experience snowfall in April and even in May. |
| April 7 , 2013: Good Job...
“Modern Maestro” (Sun., April 7, page 1A) introduces readers to the artistic adviser of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. The article equates Andrew Litton to symphonic orchestras as Peyton Manning is to football. Mr. Litton travels to foreign cities to conduct ensembles. He is working in a field he has loved since childhood. Irv Brown (Sun., April 7, page 11C, “Officially a Final Four fan”) has spent a lifetime in endeavors revolving around sports and has the stories to tell about the places he’s been and the people he’s met along the way. Future robotic engineers (Sun, April 7, page 4B, “Aye, robot) are showcased as they follow their interest in science and technology to compete for scholarships. |
March 31, 2013: Peep...
The article headlined “Marsh Madness” in the Wednesday, March 27 e-edition talks about the sixth-annual Denver Post Peeps diorama and sculpture contest. The contest is open for both kids and adults. The article shares photos of favorite dioramas and there are examples of entries throughout the Wednesday e-edition. |

The article headlined “One-day gig to dig” in the Saturday, March 23 e-edition talks about 9-year-old aspiring paleontologist Eli Navant’s undertaking of being honorary chief curator of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for a day. March 17, 2013: All things green...
Articles in Friday’s e-edition provided activity options celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day. A parade in downtown Denver (page 1C), a footrace called Lucky Laces that included a special run for Little Leprechauns along with 5K and 10K run/walks. |
| March 10, 2013: Lost or gained?
Daylight Savings Time went into effect at 2:00 am Sunday (see page 1A, Sun., March 10). Did you gain an hour, lose an hour or neither? Did you wake up at your usual time or did you wake up an hour earlier or an hour later? Electronic devices like cell phones and computers automatically adjust time settings to reflect the change in time. Clocks, watches and other devices need to be manually set. |
March 3, 2013: A pleasing palette...
“Brush up” is an article in the Saturday, March 2 Home section of the e-edition, page 1C. There are 10 ways offered to make your next paint project a stylish, painless success. In addition to some very practical things like washing the surface before applying new paint, there is discussion about colors. |

The Colorado wrestling tournament just concluded with naming of the best teams in the state and the individual state champions in the weight categories. |

| February 10, 2013: Brrr... Colorado had some snow this weekend. The eastern part of the United States had a blizzard with some areas receiving over two feet of snow. Drivers were stranded for hours on snow-covered roads before emergency workers were able to reach them. See the article on page 9A headlined “Stranded drivers spend fearful night.” |
February 3, 2013: Super... The Super Bowl is the grand finale of the football season. Football coverage of the championship game has been ramping up since the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens each won their league championship. A special section is provided in today’s e-edition (pages 1C-8C). |

January 27, 2013: Bieber and Franklin... Olympic gold-medal winner and world-record holder in swimming Missy Franklin interviewed with John Henderson of The Denver Post. The article appears on page 1C of today’s e-edition. |
January 20, 2013: Induction, initiation, launch... These words are synonyms for “inauguration”. President Barack Obama will end his first term as president at noon on January 20 and will be sworn into office for his second term. The public ceremony will be held on Monday, January 21. This date is the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. (See “Dressed to impress,” in the e-edition Main section, page 2A). |

January 13, 2013: Cool... or warm outfits... “Cheery in the Chill”, page 3C, shows a selection of Bronco football fans dressed for Saturday’s game. The weather outside was frightful, as are some of the outfits designed to support the team and provide some protection from the chill. |
January 6, 2013: I resolve to... “Farewell to 2012” held front page status on the first e-edition of 2013. “Be resolute”, an article chronicling 31 days and ways to get and stay fit and healthy in 2013 splashes across page 1C of the OutWest section. |

December 9, 2012: Longer School Days... “Nine schools in four Denver-area school districts received money to implement and study a longer school day in 2013 so researchers can determine whether more time in school means higher success for students.” |
December 2, 2012: Hats off... The hat in the article on page 23A is both valuable and invaluable. It’s not an expensive hat but it is a “hat that represents the fierce goofy independent spirit of a woman that is my mother,” posted Bridget Hughes. The article is headlined “Hat lost at Arizona airport sparks quest evoking a mother’s love.” This particular hat has brought together over 165,000 people who empathize with Bridget’s plight. The outpouring of support has eased her loss. |

November 25, 2012: The best holiday... Thanksgiving is over (however the sales that surround it are not: pages 6A, 11A, 12A, 20A, 21A, 22A, 12B, 3CC to identify a few!) December holds more holiday celebrations. Then it will be New Year’s Day! |
November 18, 2012: Thanksgiving ... It’s been obvious for a while that Thanksgiving is approaching. Recipes in the Food section on Wednesdays, articles and display advertisements reinforce that the holiday is almost here. |

November 11, 2012: Thank You... Veterans Day is November 11. Veterans can be brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, neighbors. The Sunday e-edition contains articles showing the appreciation by our community and country for those individuals who have served in our military: Honoring Veterans (p. 1A), Brain Trust (p. 1D), Veterans Day Share Your Miles (p. P4), Big sacrifices remembers with small ones (p 4B), Field Service (p. 4B). A story on page 1A of Saturday’s e-edition (and one of the activities in Reading, Writing and Communication activity) is WASPs got their wings about one of Colorado’s first female military pilots, Lucile Wise, 92. The federal holiday is Monday, November 12. |
November 4, 2012: Planning... On Mon., Oct. 29 a headline on pg. 1A stated “Storm could affect election.” Overnight Monday, Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the Eastern coast. The headline on Tues., Oct. 30 read “Waves of damage”. The next day, Wed., Oct. 31, pg. 1A storm coverage opened with “Hurt wind, fire and water.” The effects and devastation continue to be recorded in the e-edition as history is taking place. An article on page 22A in today’s paper is headlined “Storm leaves hard choices” |

October 28, 2012: Let's Party!... Pippa Middleton shares some “Bewitching Fun” in Parade Magazine’s Halloween special (insert section P to the e-edition, page 6P). Ms. Middleton’s experience is with her family’s party business and her work with a London-based events company. Among the fun offerings are The Donut Tree, Floating Ghosts, Spirited Place Cards and a Lollipop Pumpkin. |
October 21, 2012: I recommend... The words “skiing” and “Colorado” are often used in the same sentence when talking about outdoor sports. Today’s e-edition contains the annual Ski Guide (2012 Ski Guide, Travel, pages 7E-13E). Five Denver Post staffers wrote descriptions of their favorite ski areas and explained why they are favorites. |

October 06, 2012: Scare up a world of haunts... It may only be October 7, but Halloween “season” is getting in full swing. Pumpkins, treats, haunted houses and ghost tours are among the attractions, experiences and events. Read “Scare up a world of haunts” on page 10E of the Travel section and you will see that it’s the entire country, not just Colorado, ramping up for the holiday. |
September 30, 2012: Wild horses… Wild horses are in iconic symbol of the old West. They live on public lands today and are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. (“Unbridled fear for horses’ fate”, page 1A, Sun., September 30 e-edition). |

There’s been a build-up to this change of season since the first of the month when the weather almanac stated “Change on the way in sunny September” (Sat., September 1, page 10A). September 16, 2012: High tech... The business section is a good source to learn about new technology – from the dairy robot (page 5K) to companies developing new smartphones (page 5K). Monday e-editions feature a tech section titled “Plugged In” (section C). |
| September 09, 2012: Tuned in... The photo on page 2B (Denver & The West) shows kids, drums and music teacher Jessie Simpson. The kids were taking part in a music-education workshop held by the Creative Minds Organization. Classes in piano, drums, guitar and music production will be offered. |
September 2, 2012: The little screen... The Arts & Culture section in today’s e-edition features the new television shows debuting this fall (page 1E, Television: More thrills and chills, fewer laughs). Each of the reviews is succinct, using 100 words or less to summarize the storyline. |

August 26, 2012: Perspective... The Perspective section contains opinions. This week there are arguments in favor of and against the death penalty for Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes. There are letters about politicians and their plans, voter suppression, assisted suicide, preservation of public lands, etc. |
August 19, 2012: An Olympian effort... Colorado Olympians were welcomed home Saturday. US.Yea! US.Hey! is the article on page 1B in Denver & The West that informs us that nine of the 104 medals won by U.S. athletes at the recent Summer Olympic Games in London were won by Colorado athletes. Thirty-nine of Colorado’s residents competed in the games. |

We’re seeing coverage of Track and Field events and stories of some of the best places to go fishing. |
Apr. 29, 2012: My Best Teacher... The first week of May is "Teacher Appreciation Week" and May 3rd is "National Teacher's Day". Teachers, school and education are regularly featured in the Denver Post e-editions. For instance, last week President Obama visited the University of Colorado (President invests in college crowd, Wed., April 25, page 1A). Part of his speech reinforced the importance of education. |

While it’s not yet a new season, we’re getting ready. Setting the clocks to daylight savings time is one thing we traditionally do to try to get the most out of our days. |

The cranes are migrating from Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in Socorro, New Mexico and are heading to Idaho and parts of Wyoming. Imagine what it’s like to be a bird. You can fly. You can soar and swoop or dart and flit. |
