Knight Writer Writing Prompt

Encourage your students to write every week with Knight Writer, featuring creative writing prompts and story starters for fiction and non-fiction styles of writing using a story, ad, photo or other feature in the Denver Post .

Each worksheet refers students to the appropriate page in the newspaper, asks pertinent questions and then gives a writing topic. The "Order of the Pen" at the bottom of each page offers suggestions to help students improve their writing.

Four issues are linked below, to go along with the 30 days of The Denver Post available through the eEdition.

May 12, 2013: Mothers...
Page 1A of today’s e-edition is an article about military mothers (those serving in the armed forces) and the challenges and successes they have experienced. TV critic Joanne Ostrow writes about the current crop of TV moms (Arts & Culture, page 1E). Parade is asking for votes for the all-time favorite TV mom (page P4).

May 5, 2013: Fast & furriest...
Page 2B of the Sunday, May 5 e-edition reviews the annual Furry Scurry held by the Denver Dumb Friends League. Proceeds from the event help care for homeless animals in the organization’s shelters and centers. Five thousand dogs and 12,000 people scurried around the 2-mile course Saturday.

April 28, 2013: Sound of Music...
Today’s e-edition has the Summer Concert Guide for 2013 (Sun., April 28, Arts & Culture, pages 1E, 2E, and 3E). The list of events include Comedy, Hip Hop, Electronic, Pop, Country, Rock, Folk (string and jam bands), Festivals and Local Bands. That’s a lot of music.

April 21, 2013: Do over...
"Jeffco students bring history to life and have fun doing it" (Sun., April 21, page 3B) reports about students from four Jefferson County schools re-enacting the Battle of Saratoga from the Revolutionary War. Students wore period costumes and used props to add realism to their efforts. They have spent months preparing.

April 14, 2013: Snowfall...
"Cynicism, more than snow, has been piling up" (Sun., April 14, page 2B) explains that last week's forecast for snow was off the mark. Snow was predicted, it did not fall in the amounts forecast. Another April snowstorm is expected this week. We can experience snowfall in April and even in May.
